(This is Jack's new smile. It is, as you can see, an extremely aggressive attempt to show every tooth he has managed to grow in his little head. Bless his heart, I love it. And, yes, he is inside my dryer.)
Oh, Jack Jack. You, my son, are some kind of something.
The other day Jack had an incident. An accident, rather. It was aptly dubbed by my friend Karen as the day Jack fell down and broke his crown. Praise the Lord...and I mean, praise the Lord, that he is well and with not so much as a scratch or knot. He fell down the entire flight of stairs. Hardwood stairs. I was actually at a Wednesday night group with some friends from church, and Mike was home with the babies. They were at the top of the stairs together, fixing to go down, when Jack went bump. According to Mike, he was running one step behind Jack until they both made it to the bottom, where he scooped him up to check him over a hundred times. Amelia Kate's rendition of the event varies only slightly with the addition of a colorful four-letter lovely that Daddy spouted as he scrambled down the stairs after Jack. (To settle any curiosity, it was the "sh-" one.) Please, please imagine my face when I hear that trash come falling out of my 3-year-old daughter's mouth. Of the many things I have learned during my three-year stint as a mother, swift retrieval of composure was the talent I called on at that moment. I calmly told her she cannot say that word, to which she faithfully assured me that she had not said it ... but that daddy had been the one. Oh my... Let us hope her memory does not serve her for this.

Haha! I was wondering if this little accident would make it onto your blog. I am half tempted to post your telephone number on here so that all of your readers can call Miss Amelia and hear her tell the story. That girl can tell it! And at least she whispers the sh** word. Jack looks sweet with his toothy smile. He worries me being so tough and brave this early. Next thing you know Amelia will learn how to spin the dyer with Jack in it. And he, no doubt, will stumble out laughing. That will be an interesting post!

Oh my gracious! What a story! I'm glad Jack and his crown are all in one piece. Lauren has fallen down my brother in law's steps not once, but twice and lived to tell the tale. I realize this makes me sound like an incompetent mother, but things just happen sometimes!
I agree with you about maintaining composure...it is definitely a mother's gift.

oh don't, the tumbles of tots are just horrible. And it makes you feel like the worst parent in the world, doesn't matter how quickly it happens, how unforseen, you always blame yourself don't you? As if as mums we should don our super woman capes and be able to fly in a split second, to prevent them from hurting themselves.
My little girl goes through what I call her Stunt Woman phases. We have a few months of nothing, no falls or tumbles, and it's bliss. Then we'll have a week of non stop tumbles or jamming fingers in doors.
A few months back, I was upstairs doing ironing, Gorgeous Girl was downstairs - sitting on the sofa and reading - when I heard the most hideous *thud* followed by silence ( hate that silence, the quiet part before tears). I knew immediately she'd fallen from the sofa, and by the time I reached her the tears had started. She'd gone very pale and I wasn't sure if should rush her to A&E, even though I wasn't exactly sure of what had happened. Eventually she was able to tell me she'd fallen off the sofa backwards and walloped her head. Oh my word, I felt simply awful.
It's a sad fact that tumbles and scrapes - even falling down stairs - is just what children do. You can't watch them 24 hours a day, and even if we tried they'd manage to fall in the split second it took us to blink!
Hope your hubby doesn't feel too bad about what happened, children have an amazing way of getting into scrapes under our very eyes.
I'm so glad Jack-Jack is ok. No more Stunt Man Work please little man!
:o)

Well honestly, this makes me feel better about the fact that BOTH my children have fallen down an entire flight of stairs (on my watch, mind you).
I'm also glad to know my husband is not the only one who lets the sh-- word fly in moments of distress. :)
Poor Mike. Tell him I know how it feels to literally watch your child tumble down stair by stair and try desperately to stop it but can't!

So, I read this blog and said a little PTL for Jack Jack, and then I laughed. And laughed. And laughed. About AK, of course. That girl is a mess.
Poor Mike.

I am so glad this story made the blog!! I love it so much--what a sweet baby AK is! And, can I tell you that this picture of Jack makes him look like a toddler and not a baby anymore?!

Please forgive me for chuckling at this, NOT the part where your sweet baby feel down the stairs but AK's rendition of what happened. Oh the joys of parenting...

Praise the Lord that little Jack is OK! The best of parents can't prevent every tumble and fall.
I had to feel a bit sorry for Mike-esp. with Amelia Kate's version of the event in stereo.
Yes, little ones mimic everything...
Bless you all ((hugs)) and kisses for Jack!
